The cord at Eliete’s waist marks her rank in capoeira. It took her fifteen years and more bruises than she can count to earn, which is why she’s very hard to keep down. She spent Carnaval night playing in a roda on the boat deck for tourists who filmed everything and tipped nothing. Then the boat docked at Copacabana. Capoeira hides its kicks inside the ginga, a swaying step that looks like dancing until a heel arrives at head height. The dead never see it coming. She carries no weapon and has never needed one, not even for doors.
